UNI/CARE Systems facilitates coordination of care for Virginians

April 26, 2011

SARASOTA, Fla. (April 26, 2011) - UNI/CARE Systems, Inc., a leader in the field of health information technology, is proud to help nine of Virginia's community service boards offer the highest levels of coordinated care to their patients and clients.

UNI/CARE Systems provides the certified Pro-FilerTM electronic health record system, and professional support, to community service boards in Chesterfield County, Hampton and Newport News, Middle Peninsula and the Northern Neck, Danville and Pittsylvania County, the Eastern Shore, the Petersburg area (District 19 CSB), the Staunton area (Valley CSB), the Abingdon area (Highlands CSB) and the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority.

CSBs are local government agencies created by the Code of Virginia in 1968 to assure that citizens with intellectual disabilities or substance abuse receive appropriate services. The boards provide programs to address a wide range of needs for people of all ages coping with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse.

"Virginia's community services boards are on the front line in our cities, counties and neighborhoods, providing programs to help children, teens and adults with mental health and addiction issues," said May Ahdab, PhD., president and chief executive officer of UNI/CARE Systems, Inc. "UNI/CARE is dedicated to these boards and to those they serve."

Among the many responsibilities of the community service boards are to ensure the proper development of at-risk infants, help children remain in their homes and schools with adequate support, respond to psychiatric emergencies, and assist elderly and families coping with mental illness or substance abuse. The boards also sponsor prevention and education opportunities, treat substance abuse, help people with intellectual or addiction challenges to live and work independently, and support schools, law enforcement and the justice system.

Pro-FilerTM 2011 provides the community service boards with tools that allow care to be coordinated among various providers. These electronic tools help health and human services providers create a connected system of care across treatment sites and programs. The certified Pro-FilerTM 2011 system also transfers appropriate information to payors, simplifying billing and recordkeeping.

This connectivity is particularly important to community service boards, which deliver services through a network that includes public and private providers. CSBs have agreements with local human services agencies, public safety and courts and collaborate with many partner organizations to provide care.

UNI/CARE's Pro-FilerTM 2011 also helps the community service boards fulfill requirements of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act.

To comply with the act, CSBs must create standards, specifications and certification criteria ensuring that health IT systems are interoperable. The boards also must use the health IT systems and electronic health records in a meaningful way; grants, loans and incentives are available to help agencies achieve "meaningful use." And the CSBs' health IT must have controls to keep patient data private and secure. UNI/CARE works closely with the boards to help them implement Pro-FilerTM 2011 to fulfill all of the act's mandates.

"Pro-FilerTM 2011 helps CSBs step out of their individual silos and connect with partner health agencies to coordinate information about each patient's condition, history, services, and medications," Dr. Ahdab said. "The result is connected patient care and improved outcomes."
