UNI/CARE part of health IT initiative in Colorado
June 9, 2011
SARASOTA, Fla. (June 9, 2011) - Four UNI/CARE Systems, Inc., customers located in Colorado: Southeast Mental Health Services, Spanish Peaks Mental Health Care Center, West Central Mental Health Center and San Luis Valley Mental Health Center (collectively known as SyCare) will begin securely sharing patient information with one another and 16 other health facilities in four communities this summer. The four organizations -- are participating in the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization network. Known as CORHIO, the network is a public-private partnership designated to facilitate state-wide health information exchange goals. The network will focus on improving the quality of health care available to patients of the 20 facilities.
The first goal of the network is to improve long-term and post-acute care transitions through secure sharing of patient health records. UNI/CAREs integration with CORHIO will enable its customers to be in the forefront of utilizing the ONC-directed national standards for interoperability and secure exchange of protected health information (PHI) to improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of delivering care. The providers will be utilizing Pro-Filer 2011TM, UNI/CARE's CCHIT ONC-certified Complete-EHR, to connect their organizations to the statewide health information exchange (HIE). The interfaces will be based on a number of Health Level 7 (HL7) transactions to include: referrals, laboratory orders, laboratory results, radiology reports, transcription progress notes, continuity of care documents (CCD) and public health admissions. "Patients will directly benefit from their provider's access to a coordinated health record at the point of care decision making, through seamless access to the HIE repository. We believe the use of electronic health records and care coordination helps connect people and systems, thereby improving collaboration and enabling informed decision making" said May Ahdab, PhD., president and chief executive officer of UNI/CARE.
UNI/CARE Systems, which provides electronic health records to the human services and
behavioral health industry under the Pro-FilerTM brand name, is a national leader in the effort to improve health care service through enhanced information technology and Care Coordination Services.
The four SyCare agencies have used UNI/CARE's Pro-FilerTM electronic health record for many years. Other health-care providers in Colorado similarly have made early investments in health IT. Health officials in the area say Colorado has struggled with a health-care workforce shortage and realized that technology could help the workers at a low cost. Modern health-care quality initiatives and training also pointed to the need for secure patient health records that could be shared among treatment facilities.
Benefits of electronic health records include increased safety for patients, greater efficiencies for clinicians including reduction of waste, better cooperation and coordination among providers, more consistent decision-making and protocols, and timely, effective and patient-centered care.
